Itinerary

Humantay Lake Full Day Tour Itinerary

Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Cusco

Our adventure begins with a pickup at 5:00 AM directly from your accommodation in Cusco (hotel, Airbnb, or centrally located apartment). At Ali Peru Treks, we start our day at this time to allow you a more restful sleep and to ensure a comfortable journey toward our first destination: the picturesque town of Mollepata.

Upon arriving in Mollepata, we will enjoy our first nutritious breakfast at a local restaurant, prepared with regional ingredients to provide the energy needed for the hike ahead. After this refreshing start, we will continue our journey for one more hour until we reach Soraypampa, the starting point of our ascent.

Surrounded by the majesty of the Andes, we will begin the hike toward Humantay Lake. Situated at 13,780 feet (4,200 meters), this turquoise gem rests at the base of the imposing Humantay Mountain. The trek takes approximately two hours along trails offering spectacular views of snow-capped peaks and deep valleys, where you can connect with nature and spot native bird species.

Once at the lake, you will have plenty of time to explore the area, marvel at the intense color of the water, and capture memorable photographs. Your Ali Peru Treks guide will share insights into the spiritual importance of these glaciers in Andean culture. For those who prefer, horse rentals are available through the local community (additional fees apply).

After enjoying this unique scenery, we will begin our descent, hiking back for about an hour to Soraypampa. There, we will board our transportation to return to Mollepata, where a hearty buffet lunch awaits, prepared with fresh, locally sourced products to recharge your strength. The tour concludes with the drive back to the city, arriving at your accommodation in Cusco around 5:00 PM, ending an unforgettable day of adventure and natural beauty with the quality and care that defines us.

Packing List

Humantay Lake Day Trip Packing List

To fully enjoy your hike and protect yourself from the unpredictable Andean weather, we recommend bringing the following items. Being well-prepared is the key to a comfortable experience at high altitudes.

Clothing and Footwear (The Layering System)

  • Hiking Boots: Sturdy trekking boots or shoes with good traction (non-slip soles) and ankle support. Pro Tip: Do not wear brand-new shoes for the first time; make sure they are broken-in before the hike.
  • Waterproof Jacket or Rain Poncho: Mountain weather is unpredictable, even during the dry season.
  • Warm Jacket (Down or Fleece): Temperatures in Soraypampa and at the lake can be near 32°F (0°C) in the early morning.
  • Moisture-Wicking Clothing: Avoid cotton. Wear synthetic materials or merino wool that dry quickly and keep you warm.
  • Trekking Pants: Comfortable, stretchy hiking pants. Avoid jeans, as they are heavy, restrictive, and get very cold if they become damp.
  • Winter Accessories: A warm beanie, gloves, and a neck gaiter (buff) to protect yourself from the cold wind.

Sun Protection and Health

  • Sunscreen: SPF 50+ is mandatory (UV radiation is extremely high at high altitudes).
  • Sunglasses: With UV protection to prevent “snow blindness” from the glacier’s reflection.
  • Sun Hat or Cap: To protect your face and head from the intense mountain sun.
  • Lip Balm: To prevent chapped lips caused by the wind and dry air.
  • Personal Medication: If you have specific medical needs, ensure you carry your medication with you.

Gear and Accessories

  • Daypack: A small 20L to 30L backpack to comfortably carry your personal belongings.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: We recommend carrying at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water. Help us reduce single-use plastic waste in the Andes.
  • Trekking Poles: (Provided by Ali Peru Treks). These are essential for reducing the impact on your knees during the descent.
  • Camera or Smartphone: With fully charged batteries and enough memory for photos.
  • Documents and Cash
  • Original Identification: Your original Passport or ID (required for checkpoints along the route).
  • Cash (Peruvian Soles): Bring small bills and coins for local purchases,in case you decide to rent a horse from the local community (approx. 80 to 100 Soles).

Best Excursion Experience of My Life The 2 day Inca Trail tour was incredible! Our guide, Fernando, was extremely attentive to our needs and went along the trail at our pace. He also was very knowledgeable and taught us so much about the Inca empire and history of the various archaeological sites. The experience overall was seamless between being picked up in Cusco to taking the train from Ollantaytambo and the hike as well as the second day. I would recommend this experience to anyone that wants a challenge and wants to get an immersive and profound experience. My wife and I had a great time and I think this experience is even doable for children above 5 or so years old. I cannot say enough good things. Ali Peru Treks is awesome!

An Amazing Machu Picchu Experience. This tour was the absolute highlight of our trip to Peru! Having a guide to facilitate the entire experience of Machu Picchu was worth it's weight in gold. My friend and I got particularly lucky that for our tour group, it was only us two and Mesias our guide. Mesias was very knowledgeable and friendly. He was very accommodating for all of the groups requests and let us stop to enjoy the scenery very often while keeping the hike to a good pace. He also was a good photographer any time we wanted our picture taken.

Must do experience! This was truly an amazing once in a life time experience for myself and family! Definitely one we will never forget. We were very fortunate to have Mesias as our guide. He arrived at our Airbnb the day before to go over the itinerary details, transportation arrangements, food and lodging provided, and what to expect on the Inca Trail and our visit to Machu Picchu. Day 1, the Inca Trail was a bit challenging at times for our family, but our guide, Mesias was the best! Not only was he passionate and informative about Incan history and culture throughout the hike, Mesias was patient and encouraging during the more difficult areas. My family and I truly enjoyed each sight along the trail. What you will see if choosing to visit is rather breathtaking and no picture can compare. We ended in Machu Picchu around 3pm and then down to Aguas Calientas. The arranged lodging and dinner was much appreciated by the end of the day. Day 2, we decided to return to Machu Picchu at the 6am sunrise, which is worth the early morning visit. Not only is it beautiful, but much cooler as Mesias guided us through the ruins. The historical aspects were amazing. Overall, the experience was wonderful and if you choose to book this tour we highly recommend requesting Mesias.

A unique experience The Inca Trail on day 1 and Circuit 3 on day 2 make for a challenging hike for those with little experience. There was plenty of time to rest during the hike, something we appreciated. After entering Machu Picchu on day 1, we arrived at a good hotel around 3:30 PM. Despite the less than ideal weather on days one and two, which we knew was possible due to booking during the rainy season, the trip to Machu Picchu was definitely worth it, thanks to the unique view and the information we received in well spoken English about the special location, the route, and former inhabitants. For this two-day trip, the planning, transportation from and to our hotel in Cusco, all tickets, hotel, and most of the meals were taken care for us, making for a very comfortable experience. This way we could mainly focus on the hiking and having fun. We truly made memories during this tour, so I would definitely recommend booking this tour.

Lares Trek & Machu Picchu I can't recommend this trip enough! We had an amazing time on the Lares Trek. The views and camp locations were breathtaking. Balero the chef made up amazing meals, and created a special tea for me when I got an upset stomach on day 2. Segundo helped set up camp whenever we moved locations, giving us lots of time to explore. Mesaias was a fantastic guide for the trek and Machu Picchu. He answered my many questions and made sure we got to experience everything we could. We hardly saw anyone else on the trails, making it such a special experience.
