Best Time to Hike the Classic Inca Trail (Month-by-Month Guide)

Choosing the right time for your adventure is key to an unforgettable experience. In the Cusco region, the weather is defined by two primary seasons:

  • The Dry Season (April to October): This is the premier window for trekking. You will enjoy bright blue skies, crisp mountain air, and radiant sunshine. These months offer the most stable conditions for conquering high passes and capturing that perfect shot of Machu Picchu.
  • The Rainy Season (November to March): During this time, the Andes transform into a vibrant, lush paradise. While you should expect torrential but usually brief showers, you will be rewarded with flourishing flora and fauna and fewer crowds.

Inca Trail Permits 2026/2027: Everything You Need to Know

If hiking to Machu Picchu is on your bucket list, timing is everything. The Peruvian government strictly limits access to the trail to preserve its heritage, making permits the most critical part of your travel planning. For those dreaming of the full experience, the Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike remains the gold standard, but with rapidly changing Inca Trail availability, securing your spot requires moving faster than a Chasqui runner.

Why Do You Need a Permit?

To protect the trail’s ecosystem and archaeological sites, only 500 permits are issued per day. This might sound like a lot, but consider this:

  • The Breakdown: Only about 200 permits are for tourists; the remaining 300 are for mandatory support staff (guides, porters, and cooks).
  • The Demand: Thousands of travelers from around the globe compete for these few hundred spots daily.

Booking Timeline & Release Dates

Permits for the 2026 season are expected to go on sale in October/November 2025. If you’re targeting 2027, plan for a late 2026 release.

SeasonMonthsWhen to Book
Peak SeasonMay, June, July, August6 to 9 months in advance
Shoulder SeasonApril, September, October4 to 6 months in advance
Low SeasonNov, Dec, Jan, March3 to 4 months in advance
ClosedFebruaryNo permits (Maintenance)

Pro Tip: If you have fixed vacation dates for your Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike, we recommend booking as soon as the permits are released. May and June often sell out within hours.

Essential Rules for Travellers

  • Passport is King: You cannot book a permit without a valid passport. The info on your permit must match your physical passport exactly at every checkpoint.
  • Non-Transferable: Once a permit is issued in your name, it cannot be changed, refunded, or transferred to a friend or family member.
  • Authorized Operators Only: You cannot buy a permit yourself. By law, you must hike with a licensed tour operator who secures the permit on your behalf.
  • Machu Picchu Entry: As of 2026, your Inca Trail permit typically includes entry to Machu Picchu (usually Circuit 3), but always verify with your operator if you wish to climb Huayna Picchu as an add-on.

What if Permits Are Sold Out?

If the Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike is full for your dates, don’t panic. You can still reach the Sun Gate via the Short Inca Trail (2 days) or choose an “Alternative Trek” like the Salkantay Trek or Lares Trek. These offer breathtaking Andean scenery and usually don’t require the same months-in-advance permit race.

Itinerary

Day-by-Day Itinerary: Classic Inca Trail 4 Days

Day 1: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 82 – Hatunchaca – Ayapata.

Your epic Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike adventure starts with a seamless pick-up directly from your hotel in Cusco, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. At approximately 5:00 AM, your expert Ali Perú Treks guide and our private transport will pick you up to head toward the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo. We will make a strategic stop there to enjoy a revitalizing breakfast and make final preparations.

From there, we will continue toward Km 82, the official gateway to the Inca Trail. Here, you will meet your dedicated team of professional porters and our talented chef. After the most intense day of trekking, the third day begins with a nutritious breakfast to recharge your energy. This section welcomes us with spectacular landscapes and a more relaxed pace, designed to deeply connect with nature. We begin our hike from Chaquicocha, entering the fascinating cloud forest. For many travelers, this is the most beautiful sector of the entire Inca Trail, where we will cross original stone tunnels and observe a vibrant biodiversity unique in the world.

Our first stop is Phuyupatamarca («Town Above the Clouds»), located at 12,073 ft (3,680 m). From this strategic point, we will enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Salkantay and the majestic Urubamba Valley. After exploring its ritual fountains, we will begin the descent via perfectly preserved Inca stairways toward the site of Intipata, an impressive agricultural terrace offering an unparalleled panoramic view of the river and mountains.

Finally, we will arrive at our campsite at Wiñaywayna. Here, you will have plenty of time to enjoy a refreshing and revitalizing shower. In the afternoon, we will take a guided tour of the stunning Inca site of Wiñaywayna («Forever Young»), considered the most spectacular and mystical archaeological complex before reaching the citadel of Machu Picchu.

From the Sun Gate, we will descend for approximately 1 hour to reach the main platform of Circuit 1, the perfect location to capture the classic postcard photographs of the citadel. After immortalizing this moment, we will take a brief technical break and exit the Inca site to use the restrooms located outside the archaeological area.

Following the break, we will re-enter through Circuit 3 to begin your private, two-hour guided tour. Your expert Ali Perú Treks guide will lead you through the most iconic areas, revealing the deep history and mysteries surrounding this World Wonder.

Map

Classic Inca Trail Route Map & Elevation Profile (4 Days)

Below you’ll find two essential planning tools for your Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike. On the left, the route map shows the full trail from the starting point at KM 82 (Piscacucho, 8,924 ft) to the Sun Gate entrance of Machu Picchu — including key archaeological sites such as Llactapata, Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, Phuyupatamarca, and Wiñay Wayna, plus the train and bus connections used at the start and end of the trek.

On the right, the elevation profile breaks down the daily ascents and descents across all 4 days — total trail distance of 26 miles (43 km), cumulative elevation gain, estimated hiking time per day, and the altitude reached at each camp. Day 2 is the most challenging, crossing Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusca) at 13,828 ft — the highest point of the entire hike.

Together, these two maps give every hiker a clear picture of both the logistics and the physical demands of the Classic Inca Trail — one of the most iconic multi-day hikes in the world.

Travel Info

Essential Travel Information for Your Inca Trail Hike

How to Get to the Inca Trail Starting Point (KM 82)

The Classic Inca Trail begins at KM 82 (Piscacucho), located approximately 82 km from Cusco by road. Most hikers travel from Cusco to the trailhead by private bus, which takes around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.

Ali Peru Treks includes round-trip transportation in all our 4-day Inca Trail packages — your pickup is at your hotel in Cusco at approximately 5:00 AM on Day 1. At the end of the trek, you’ll return to Cusco by train from Aguas Calientes (included), arriving in the evening of Day 4.

Important: You must present your original passport at the KM 82 checkpoint — no copies accepted. Make sure the name on your Inca Trail permit matches your passport exactly.

Inca Trail Permits: How to Book in Advance

Inca Trail permits are strictly limited to 500 people per day (including guides and porters), regulated by Peru’s Ministry of Culture. For the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail, only 200 tourist spots are available daily — and they sell out 5 to 8 months in advance, especially for the dry season (May through September).

To secure your permit, we need a copy of your passport and a deposit at the time of booking. Permits are non-transferable and non-refundable once issued — the name and passport number on your permit must match exactly on the day of the hike.

Our recommendation for 2026 and 2027: book at least 6 months ahead if you plan to hike between June and August. For shoulder season (April, May, September, October), 3 to 4 months in advance is usually sufficient.

Physical Fitness Requirements for the 4-Day Hike

The Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike is considered a moderately challenging trek. You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of cardiovascular fitness is important — especially for Day 2, which involves a 4-hour ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass at 13,828 ft (4,215 m).

We recommend preparing with 6 to 8 weeks of regular cardio training before your hike — hiking, running, cycling, or stair climbing all work well. If you’re based at sea level, plan to spend at least 2 days in Cusco (11,152 ft) before the trek to begin acclimatizing.

The daily hiking distances are:

  • Day 1: 7.5 miles (12 km) — Easy to moderate
  • Day 2: 9.5 miles (15 km) — Hard (highest elevation day)
  • Day 3: 6 miles (10 km) — Moderate
  • Day 4: 3 miles (6 km) — Easy (arrival at Machu Picchu)

Altitude Sickness on the Inca Trail: How to Prepare

Altitude sickness (AMS — Acute Mountain Sickness) is the most common challenge for hikers on the Inca Trail, particularly on Day 2 near Dead Woman’s Pass. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue — and they can affect anyone regardless of fitness level.

How to reduce your risk:

  • Arrive in Cusco at least 2 days before the trek starts
  • Stay hydrated — drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day
  • Avoid alcohol for the first 48 hours in Cusco
  • Consider Diamox (acetazolamide) — consult your doctor before travel
  • Walk slowly and listen to your body — “Poco a poco” is the rule

Our guides are trained in altitude sickness recognition and carry a first aid kit and supplemental oxygen on all treks. Your safety is our top priority.

What to Expect Before Departure: Inca Trail Briefing

The evening before your trek, we hold a mandatory briefing at 6:00 PM at our main office in Cusco.

  • Why it matters: You will meet your professional guide, receive your 7 kg (15 lbs) duffel bag, and go over the final technical details of the route to ensure your safety.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike

The Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike is rated moderately challenging. The hardest section is Day 2, which involves a steep ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass at 13,828 ft (4,215 m). Most hikers in average physical condition complete the trail successfully with proper preparation. We recommend 6–8 weeks of cardio training and 2 days of acclimatization in Cusco before the hike.

For the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail, we recommend booking at least 5 to 6 months in advance. Permits are strictly limited to 500 people per day and sell out quickly — especially for peak season months (June, July, and August). For 2026 and 2027 departures, the earlier you book, the better your chances of securing your preferred dates.

Our Classic Inca Trail 4-Day package includes: Inca Trail permit, professional bilingual guide, all camping equipment (tent, sleeping mat, dining tent), all meals from Day 1 lunch to Day 4 breakfast, porters (carrying up to 7 kg of group gear), first aid kit and supplemental oxygen, round-trip transportation from Cusco, and entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. Not included: sleeping bag (available for rent), travel insurance, and personal expenses.

The Classic Inca Trail 4-Day Hike with Ali Peru Treks starts from $760 USD per person. This is an all-inclusive price with no hidden fees — what you see is what you pay. The cost covers your permit, guide, porters, all meals, camping equipment, and transportation. Group discounts are available for parties of 4 or more.

Yes — the Inca Trail is very safe for solo travelers. All hikers must trek with a licensed operator and certified guide, which means you’re never alone on the trail. Our small group tours (maximum 12 people) are ideal for solo travelers, as they offer the safety and logistics of a group while still feeling personal and intimate.

Rain is common on the Inca Trail, especially between November and March. Our waterproof camping equipment keeps you dry at camp, and the trail remains open year-round except during February (mandatory closure for maintenance). We recommend packing a quality rain jacket, waterproof trekking pants, and waterproof covers for your backpack regardless of the season.

No — independent hiking on the Classic Inca Trail is not permitted by Peruvian law. All hikers must be accompanied by a licensed guide from a government-registered tour operator. This regulation exists to protect both the trail and its visitors. Ali Peru Treks is a fully licensed and government-registered Inca Trail operator based in Cusco.

Peruvian regulations allow a maximum of 16 tourists per licensed group on the Classic Inca Trail. At Ali Peru Treks, we cap our groups at 12 people maximum — smaller than the legal limit — to give every hiker a more personal, less crowded experience on the trail.

How can I book the 4-Day Inca Trail?

The process is simple and secure:

Visit our website and click on “Book Now.”

Complete the form with your exact passport details (Full Name, Passport Number, Nationality, and D.O.B.).

Submit a $200.00 USD security deposit to secure your permits. You will receive a detailed Confirmation Manual once our team has successfully secured your government permits.

What is a “Duffel Bag” and how does it work?

During your pre-trek briefing, we will provide you with a professional Duffel Bag.

  • Weight Limit: Up to 7 kg (15 lbs).
  • Logistics: This bag will be carried by our team of porters. You only need to carry a small daypack with your essentials.
  • Note: Out of these 7 kg, approximately 3 kg are allocated for your sleeping bag and pad, leaving you 4 kg for your personal clothing and gear.

What should I carry in my daypack?

We recommend a 25L to 30L backpack containing:

  • Your original passport (mandatory for checkpoints).
  • Water (at least 2 liters).
  • Rain poncho and sunscreen.
  • Camera and power banks (there is no electricity at the campsites).

How difficult is the hike and how do I manage the altitude?

The Inca Trail is rated as moderate to challenging. We reach the highest point at “Dead Woman’s Pass” at 13,835 ft (4,217 m).

  • Acclimatization: It is imperative to stay in Cusco for at least 48 to 72 hours before starting the trek.
  • Safety: Our lead guides are certified in Wilderness First Aid and carry medical-grade oxygen and specialized first-aid kits on every departure.

What are the bathroom facilities like on the trail?

This is a major advantage of traveling with Ali Peru Treks. Unlike the public facilities provided by the government (which can be unsanitary), we set up private, portable toilet tents at every lunch spot and campsite. We guarantee hygiene, privacy, and comfort in the heart of the Andes.

What is the food like? Can you accommodate dietary restrictions?

We employ professional mountain chefs. You will enjoy gourmet meals prepared on-site with fresh ingredients.

  • Special Diets: We cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and specific allergy requirements at no additional cost. Please simply inform us at the time of booking.

What is Ali Peru Treks’ social commitment?

We are a local agency based in Cusco. By traveling with us, you directly support the families of the Huayllaccocha community. We provide fair wages and insurance for our porters and allocate a portion of our profits to educational projects in their home villages.

What time do we return to Cusco on Day 4?

After visiting Machu Picchu, you will generally return by train to Ollantaytambo or Poroy in the afternoon (between 2:55 PM and 3:55 PM). Our private transport will meet you at the station to drop you off at your hotel in Cusco around 7:00 PM.

Is there a student discount?

Yes. Students under 18, or those aged 18 to 25 with a valid university ID card, receive a $40.00 USD discount. You must send a clear copy of both your ID and passport at the time of booking to our official email.

Can I store my luggage at your office?

Absolutely. We provide free, secure storage at our office for your main luggage during the trek. You should only bring essential items for the trail.

What time will we reach the citadel on Day 4?

Our itinerary is designed for you to reach the Intipunku (Sun Gate) at approximately 6:30 AM, arriving at the Machu Picchu citadel by 8:00 AM. This timing allows you to avoid the large crowds arriving by train.

Is it possible to see the sunrise?

The Wiñaywayna checkpoint opens at 5:30 AM. The hike to the Sun Gate takes about 80 minutes. Sunrise typically occurs between 6:00 AM and 6:40 AM; therefore, you will likely see the change of light while on the trail or upon reaching the gate.

Ali Peru Treks values honesty: sunrise visibility depends entirely on weather conditions and government checkpoint schedules.

Which Machu Picchu circuits are included?

Your Inca Trail permit includes Circuits 1 and 3 (Upper Terrace Route and Royal Route), providing the classic panoramic views.

Why does Ali Peru Treks prioritize porter welfare?

As a local company, we treat our team like family. We strictly respect the 20 kg (44 lbs) load limit per porter and guarantee that our support staff receives dignified treatment, quality food, and fair wages. By traveling with us, you support the economy of high-Andean communities like Huayllaccocha.
